Awatere Safaris is based in the central South Island of New Zealand, near the picturesque lakeside resort towns of Queenstown and Wanaka. Along with being amidst some of the finest hunting in New Zealand, these popular destinations offer a number of exciting activities, adventures plus touring and accommodation options for before or after your hunt.

Awatere Safaris NZ

We are fortunate enough to be located amidst some of the most incredibly spectacular landscapes in the world. Rugged mountain ranges, glaciers, Fiords, rain forests, lush river valleys, alpine tundra and crystal clear lakes and rivers sets New Zealand apart from any other location on the planet. We encourage you to set aside some extra time outside of the hunt to experience some of what our country has to offer.

We will help you to arrange your touring itinerary and recommend the areas, sights and activities we think you will enjoy the most. For the thrill seekers, Queenstown is the adventure capital of the world and this action packed resort town is certainly going to keep you adrenalised and entertained. For those who would prefer a more relaxed pace of life, perhaps take a scenic helicopter flight over the mountains and glaciers to Milford sound and stop off along the way to have a fresh lobster gourmet picnic lunch on a remote west coast beach, a lake or a mountain top.

Awatere Safaris NZ

Land to hunt, fish, freedom

We have huge tracts of both privately owned land and government land concessions to hunt all over the South Island and some areas of the North Island. This is why we offer several accommodation options to suit every individual and also to ensure we are as close as possible to the areas where you will be hunting.

More than hunting

This is also provides a great environment for any non hunting companions or family members who might be accompanying you but who might prefer to do be doing something different each day while you hunt.

Choices

The choice is yours.
We provide gourmet cuisine for every meal and dietary requirements for each individual are very well catered to. Fresh local produce is used exclusively and where possible, premium game meats are prepared to your specifications.

Accommodation

Awatere safaris offers several different accommodation options for our customers. Although we are mainly based in Wanaka, we do hunt a number of different locations around New Zealand, which require the need to be staying away from home base at times.

Food to compliment your surroundings
...and surroundings to compliment your food
You have come to hunt? There is also so much more we are able to offer.
Our taylor made packages give you the freedom to relax.

Our accomodation options can range from spike camps in the mountains and back country cabins, to comfortable spacious self contained units or high end 5 star luxury lodges.

In Wanaka, our standard lodging option is very relaxing, private homestyle accommodation with all the comforts you would require. Should you be seeking a 5 star super luxury experience we have additional options there also.

Daily room service, in house laundry, wifi and computer are available with all options.

We provide hearty breakfast options, delicious picnic lunches while hunting and in the evenings our chef will prepare gourmet dinners to your liking and preference.

Our free range camps provide more rustic, historic style accommodations but these are all warm, clean, tidy and equipped with electricity, running water, decent bathrooms, electric ovens, comfortable beds, open fires and laundry options.

In other parts of the country we provide private lodges and nice hotels to suit every individual in your group.

Our Guides

Your professional guide will ensure you get the very best chance of securing your trophy and can provide you with a choice of high quality firearms to save you travelling with your own, which is peace of mind if you intend on touring and sightseeing or visiting another country before or after your hunt.

Your guide will also ensure you get great photographs of your trophies and field dress them for you. We will then arrange delivery for these to be prepared for either taxidermy or export.

Firearms

Rifles

We can supply you with a good quality rifle in a suitable caliber for the species you intend to hunt but if you prefer to bring your own that is no problem either. If you do wish to bring your own rifle it is quite a simple procedure to go through and New Zealand is a very safe and firearm friendly country.

Ranges vary depending on the species and the terrain you are hunting in, but typically are between 200 and 350 yards. With the tahr and chamois they can be out around 500 or beyond at times but this is less common. We recommend a minimum of 270 win. The 7mm or .30 cal wsm's and magnum calibers are a better choice for the bigger game and the longer shots.

Bring at least 40 rounds of ammunition that you are familiar with, good quality bullets are essential.
We recommend Barnes bullets http://www.barnesbullets.com/catalog/ .

Ensure you have spent some time familiarising yourself with your rifle before you arrive. Zero at 200 yards. Ability to shoot accurately at longer ranges is an advantage so if you are buying a new scope consider one with a ballistic turret which you can have matched to the ammunition you are shooting. We recommend Swarovski Z5 with Ballistic turret. http://www.swarovskioptik.com/hunting/z5-3p5-18x44-p-c20050301/z5-3p5-18x44-p-bt-l-4w-p5006360
